Should I Take the CELPIP or IELTS Exam?

If you need to prove your English proficiency for immigration, work, or study, you might be wondering: Should I take the CELPIP or IELTS exam? Both tests are widely accepted, but they have key differences that can help you decide which is the better fit for you.

What is your reason to take the English test?
What is your reason to take the English test?

1. Test Format and Structure

The CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) is entirely a computer-based test (including speaking). It has been designed for real-life language use, and covers four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

The IELTS (pronounced eye-L-TS) is the International English Language Testing System. It covers the same four skills. However, you have a few more choices when it comes to IELTS. First, you can choose to take a paper-based or computer-based version. Of course, if you take IELTS on a computer, you can receive your results in a few days. If you are in no rush, and prefer the old pen & paper test, you can get results in 10-14 days.

There are 2 important types of IELTS: Academic (for university entry) and General (for immigration/work). If you are simply in need of an English exam for permanent residence or citizenship purposes, do not take the more difficult Academic version. The IELTS Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, who will ask questions and give you topics on which to share your thoughts and opinions.

2. Which Test Is Easier?

Both the CELPIP and IELTS are English proficiency language exams. The question is not "Which test is easier?" but rather "Why do I need to take an English test?" Check with your agency, university, or immigration department to answer that question.

If you're more comfortable typing on a computer, the CELPIP or the IELTS computer-based test may be easier for you. If you prefer interacting with a real person in the Speaking section, IELTS could be better.

Do you have trouble with the wide variety of English accents? The CELPIP uses North American accents, while IELTS includes a variety of accents (British, Australian, American, etc.) As for style, IELTS Reading and Writing tasks are more academic, whereas CELPIP focuses on real-world scenarios.

3. Scoring Differences

The CELPIP English test uses the Canadian Language Benchmark - CLB - levels, which range from 1 to 12. Anything from CLB 7 and up is very good. IELTS band scores range from 1 to 9. Often, immigration programs require specific CLB levels, which align with IELTS scores (e.g., CLB 7 = IELTS 6.0). Think of it as a ruler with both inches and centimeters.

4. Test Availability and Costs

The CELPIP is mainly available in Canada and intended for newcomers in Canada. On the other hand, the IELTS test is available worldwide with many more test centres. For the CELPIP, expect to pay around $290, while the IELTS test will range from $330 to $360. However, the cost of each test should not be your main concern.

Which Test Should You Take?

Very simply put, take CELPIP if you are applying for Canadian immigration and prefer a fully computer-based test. Take IELTS if you need a test that is recognized by universities and governments worldwide (or if you prefer a face-to-face speaking test).

Final Thoughts

Choosing between CELPIP and IELTS depends on your goals and comfort level with different test formats. If you're unsure, try free sample tests from both and see which one feels more natural.
